Directions to Trailheads

  • Caribou Lake Trail (Blue Shed 2)
    From the Lake Street/East End Road intersection in Homer, go out East End Road approximately 18.9 miles. Mileage markers are on East End Road. You'll notice a small lake (may be snow covered) off to your left off of East End Road. Turn left there at the large open intersection on to Basargin Road (heading toward Razdolna). Go on Basargin Road about 3.6 miles and turn left at Willard Road. There are trail signs there at the intersection indicating Caribou Lake Trail trail head. Continue down Willard Road about .9 miles, and turn in to the large parking area on the left. NOTE: Road signs are missing from both Basargin and Willard roads. Also, Google Earth/Google Maps erroneously shows Basargin Road as Circle Lake Road at East End Road.

GPS Waypoints


The files below are the waypoints contained on the Tyvek map that many of us carry out at Caribou Hills. Once loaded in your GPS, your GPS becomes an excellent companion to the map.

Geodetic Systems (Datums)


The Tyvek map itself uses the NAD 27 Alaska datum. Most GPS units factory default to the WGS 84 datum. WGS 84 varies from NAD 27 by only a few seconds. A second of latitude is just over 100', a second of longitude at our location is less, as it decreases closer to the poles. For recreational use, with datum is perfectly fine, but if you are participating in a SAR (Search and Rescue) effort where exact positions are important, be sure that you match your GPS unit's datum to that of the search team.

Geographic Coordinate Systems


There are at least 25 different systems used to represent geographic coordinates. For coordinates, the Tyvek map uses traditional degrees/minutes/seconds (DMS). Most GPS receivers use one of the three systems below:

  • WGS84
    A fully decimal format popular with GIS systems and used in higher-end GPS equipment. Positive values occur north of the equator and east of the prime meridian to the international date line, while negative values occur south of the equator and west of the prime meridian.

  • Deg/Min/Sec
    The standard minutes/seconds translation of latitude/longitude; many GPS units support this traditional format. This is the format of the Tyvek map.

  • GPS
    A mixed minutes/decimal format which is becoming the standard for GPS equipment. All values are positive; the hemisphere is indicated by N and W. Minutes are attached to the degrees of the coordinates, while seconds are expressed in decimal format with the minutes.
